This car has a special value to me in that it was the first Tamiya kit I ever built, and it was the first vehicle I bought specifically for Ultimate Tamiya. It would also be later turned into my first Tamiya-based project car, "The Major." Other than that, it's a pretty typical TT01. This one comes with the TEU101-BK ESC and TLU-01 LED controller. Probably the biggest standout attribute of this particular kit for me is the set of decals it includes, or rather, the number of them it includes, approximately 80! Being very careful, it took almost 3 hours just to apply them, not including the time to paint & install the light buckets, side view mirrors, and wing. True model-building enthusiasts will find this very satisfying, but unfortunately a lot of RC hobbyists may become frustrated trying to duplicate the box art look. For these folks, it may be better to get a different TT01 kit, or consider the pre-built XB set with its finished body.
Building tips
- Unlike I did, be sure to use matching paints for the wing & body! I highly recommend Tamiya's spray paints as their quality and finish is excellent. Use their "For Plastics" paint for the wing and the mirrors, and "Polycarbonate" paint for the body itself. Don't mix & match these or whichever you get wrong will crack & peel once you drive!
- When it comes time to attack the sticker sheet, keep a bowl of dilute soapy water handy. Rub a coat onto your body where you're going to apply the sticker to keep it from fully adhering. This gives you a chance to move it around easily. This will really come in handy when you're doing the decals on the sides of this body, as many need to line up against eachother or overlap perfectly.
- If you're going to use this car as a drifter, lock your diffs as you build them to save some time later. Also, before you glue the tires, remember drifting requires special tires. The kit stock tires are not good for drifting under any conditions.
